Pain in the lower front teeth — what causes it?

The lower front teeth are particularly sensitive to plaque, uneven chewing pressure, and teeth grinding. Pain can stem from several factors, and it is important to diagnose the source before treatment.

Common causes

Deepening plaque, a tooth crack, local gum inflammation, or overload from grinding. Sometimes pain is referred from the jaw muscles and not from the tooth itself.

How to diagnose?

A clinical examination, panoramic or on-site CT scan, and TMJ (jaw joint) examination. The accurate diagnosis is what determines the correct treatment.

What is the treatment?

Anything from cleaning and restoration to root canal treatment or a night guard, depending on the source. Early treatment prevents more expensive complications.
